Does anyone know a good source for springs? I have found some spring websites but they have minimum orders of like $50. I need some specific sizes for my upcoming build, but cannot find them. If anyone is wondering I need a .75"x4.75" and a .375"x6" spring with a wire diameter of about .60 or so.

Brownell's has several assortment packs that are worth having.

about 7 or 8 years ago I came across blue prints for a hand held spring making device. And one of our members by the name of Sam built it and showed it to me during one of the old "weaponeer build parties" and you just purchased spring steel rod of the thickness needed, and the "winder" would make the spring that you wanted or needed (great for coil springs that are very hard to find).

I really wish I could have had one made for me.... so I could have made some springs for the membership (being fully disabled, it's not like I would not have had the time to do it now.  lol)         &n bsp;         &n bsp;

If anyone spots the blueprints, or can make it again, let me know..  I bet we have the talent to improve it.     Heck, I wish I had the ability to make it, because I would make 50 to 100 of the things..  Engrave them with Limited Edition Weaponeer Coil Spring maker.  And then sell them to raise money...   and I bet they would sell...  any talented gunsmith should have one..  lol

In fact, the WEAPONEER "brand" would be perfect for selling custom gunsmith tools.   Then we wouldn't have any issues for hosting fees  !

I have access to a mini lathe but it can't go lower than 8 threads per inch, so id be stuck with springs with a max distance of 1/8 between coils, which is fine for small stuff but not useful for what I need.

I just made a titanium guide for a guy.
He smokes a douche flute. One of those E-cig vaporizer things.
He's got a little rig that winds coils with a brass guide. After two dozen coils he wore out the guide.

Anyway, he brought it in to work and I saw it work its magic. He just set it up on the bench, adjusted tension on the bobbin like a sewing machine and let it eat. The drill chuck end has about .050" run out, but it works.

The Daedalus:

This looks promising, but more geared towards coil windings.

Got an email today from Home Shop Machinist:

Homemade Springs
by Mark Jachniewicz

My wife and I like to go to flea markets. Besides good exercise it is a pleasure to get a real bargain whether you need it or not.

Recently, I bought a very small hand drill for the high price of $1. After I got the chuck off and took it apart I noticed it had no springs, probably either rusted away or lost. So, I bought a spring kit from Harbor Freight. However, naturally, they did not fit into the spring holes of the chuck jaws, which were 1/8" diameter.

PhotoI decided to make the springs and bought spring wire. After watching instructions on YouTube I tried one design that used a pipe to wind a spring on a spindle, but it did not work for me. So, I used my Makita drill and a nail and it worked!

I first put the wire, then the nail, into the jaws of the chuck and tightened with all my might. I spun the drill at about 60 rpm, keeping great tension with my hand on the one foot or so of wire I used. As I got near the end I held the wire with pliers so as not to waste any.

Once the spring is wound, I just clip them off to the right size or loop them. I can make a compression spring by simply stretching a tension spring a little bit.
