Needing some advice here. For some crazy reason I am starting another project gun. I picked up a clapped out Rem rolling block 1 1/2 for really cheap. it is chambered for 50/110 and I have purchased a new barrel and have threadit to fit the receiver. Advice needed is what to chamber it for. Am open to any and all suggestions. Please don't advise that I restore it. the gun was left outside for a long long time in central NC. Rust has pretty much eliminated that option. Plus the barrel had nearly no discernible lands and grooves left. The action cleaned up very well and have only had to replace springs and two stock screws. This rifle has the rotating type ejector, not the earlier straight one. Thanks , guys

Forgot to mention the barrel I grabbed up is a 416 stainless in 50 cal. 1.275 inch dia, 34 inches long with a 1 in 28 twist rate. Thanks again

.50" Beowulf, then you have an excuse to build an AR upper to match your single shot.

Bikergunnut- as a Biker and builder I share your thoughts on the 50-70. Have 3 others in 45-70,45-90, so 50-70 should be just as much fun! My 45-90 has a Malcolm 6 power 22 inch tube and 500 yard bulls are almost too easy. The 50 Beowulf is more in line with what I actually had in mind however. Modern semi long range cartridge on an antique action. Plus the idea of an AR version also sounds good. Would give me an excuse to jump back into machining the AR lowers again. Hmmmm. Thanks for the input-now to find a chamber reamer I can borrow or rent.

Did a little more research as I haven't much experience with the 50 Beowulf. cartridge. Ballistics look to be a little weaker than what I thunk at first. The 50-110 load was pretty hot back in the day. And from the looks of my original barrel, and condition of the action, was not overpowering for the # 1 or 1 1/2. After cleaning the action thoroughly and smoothing out the heavy external pitting I had it both magnafluxed and x-rayed. It shows no stress probs. I shoot 50 BMG also so am not scared of heavy loads. Is there anythiing new out there? Something that might approach the original load? Maybe I need to stretch myself a little further and develop something entirely new? Thanks guys

Bikergunnut- have used both of these rental services in the past but it never occurred to me to check them out to see what might be available. Always just made a decision and called an order in. Am going to check several of these to see if any are more to my liking than the Beowulf. This is why I joined the forum to begin with. Thanks, will post pics asap. I have a few projects under way to do that with. Unfortunately I am rather slack about photoing work in progress. I believe you will like my take on AR 15 pistol. 2 innovative features on a 6 7/8 barreled build. thanks again

Another option would be .50" GI or .50" AE, then you could have a pistol to go w/ it.

Yeah BB'er I have considered that and the 500 s&w, They just don't quite have the power level I think the action is capable of handling. The 50-110 load kicked a##, i shot this rifle about 20 years ago with a smokeless reload that the owner had worked up and was very impressed with what it was capable of. He died a few years ago nd one of his grandchildren took it out and fired it a few rounds nd parked it beside the rear of the hog house where it sat until I spotted it about 2 yrs ago. That is how it came to be mine. At that time it was locked up and completely inoperable, hence the cheap price. I received a few rounds of the reloads. They have what appears to be Bullseye below 825grain cast lead round nose. Have not weighed the powder. I know that Rem sold this same action chambered in 30/40 Krag smokeless also. Should handle carefully loaded pretty nicely. Everything I can find indicates the 50-110 at somewhere around 38,500 to 42.000 cup. Pretty strong for BP! I really want to stay close to that if I can. Have plenty of smaller cal rifles, only one in 50 right now- an older Barrett mag fed BA which I LOVE.
