Does anyone know what this symbolizes? My girl friend received this from her grandfather, who was a career military man. He traveled the world, so it's hard narrow down the places he could have bought it.

Persian sounds good.  Also he was in the medical field while in the military. I would post a response, but the sight is not letting me respond.

Two politicians making campaign speeches?    Actually looks vaguely Inca or Egyptian.

Married couple arguing over where to plant a tree.

(At least, that's what it looked like a month ago when I tried to plant a rhododendron.)

The closest thing I can find is the Mesoptamian or Sumarian Tree of life.

The earliest example I can find is this one.

Although the Tree of life is central to many ancient civilisations, I'm pretty sure what you have a more likely to come from ancient persia, a lot older than Mesopotamia or Sumaria.
It's certainly not Egyptian, or Incan.

I actually thought that it wold look good on a shirt also, but I wanted to make sure that it doesn't say "kill, kill, kill, the white man" in Sumarian.  Not that anyone would know any ways.

It could be Middle Eastern in origin. Those ducks certainly aren't anatomically correct. People who never portray people naked probably wouldn't have a lot of art experience in that area.

Maybe the center symbol is somehow related to runes, or some kind of  2 or 3 rune combination or whatnot...

I searched several days this early spring, and it seems that it may be Phoenician origin. No idea as to it's significance. Must have hd some importance to have been made into jewelry. Still looks like aliens laughing at a broken kite or weather balloon to me however. Bout as good an explanation as any other though.

Best I can find is it's similar to the ancient Sumerian symbol for Barley.
Its style is really old before people before people started using more formalised Glyphs.
Probably a modern reproduction.

Appears to be to God's invoking crop protection.

Try asking a museum or the antiquities dept of a university.

Uncle on mom's side spent 30 yrs as a Prof. at UoP in Stockton, CA. Anatomy & physiology, not history, said almost exactly that after I sent him the link for it. Their hist dept included the Phoenician possibility based on the duckbill looking entities. Also said that if it was an original a Univ or museum would appraise it as priceless. And to never let it out of your hands unless you didn't care whether it was returned or not. This type of antiquity tend to become "misplaced during examination" only to mystically appear in a collection years later. The semi round object partially seen at the top is most likely the sun, although usually depicted as a complete orb instead of just a small segment. UoP hist dept had seen nothing that had those exact depictions though and was puzzled as well. And the possibility that it is complete fake - common in early 20th cent-was mentioned also. Archeologists were fooled by worse copies or outright fakes quite often. Still a cool conversation piece, either way. And it still looks like aliens and a busted kite to me. But I don't worship the sun. Good stuff Sagitarii

Two no ducks fighting over who broke the Tree of life... the looser ends up as duck soup !

If it's not the tree of life (at least for one duck) then at least we know it's a male tree.....
