I don't normally do a "first look" or initial impression articles on products. I normally use, abuse, and get to know them first, but this will be a first.

The SGWorks SKS Bullpup was a LONG project that many people didn't know would ever really finish (well over a year), and it has had a lot of revisions along the way, and product improvements.

I just received my conversion kit and wanted to pass on some first impressions to those still waiting to receive them.

Well, the wait was worth it based on the quality I'm seeing. The whole thing is VERY NICE, and of top quality, and how they sold these at such a low cost I'll never know.

now these photos are just..  pull it out of the box, push it together and snap some pics.

but the detail inside is incredible, and the FCG alone is worth the price that have for the whole conversion.

If you have an SKS and didn't buy one, you really lost out on this one.  the intro price of $119 was MORE than worth it.

If you have an SKS and still want one...  no problem, you can buy one (for the retail price) and it will be shipped out as soon as they have shipped to everyone else in line to buy one.

just how nice is this kit?  well, if you don't havce an SKS buy one.

it really is a VERY nice setup, and it's the best commercial bullpup I have seen yet.

below were just a few pics I took just to get the word out on how nice this kit is, and there will be additional articles on this kit for the build, built tips, and stippling.

It's no different that 95% of the weapons made today.  few use wood anymore..  it warps, expands, presses against barrels to throw off shots due to harmonics.

But the everything else is all steel SKS with a better trigger pull, shorter, and it may even be lighter.

I'm 25 and I don't prefer plastics, but I like them cause they are superior than wood. But something about the marriage of wood and iron formed to make a weapon is just beautiful.

My Mosin M44 is my work horse and I would never put plastic on it. Its my ranch rifle and bush gun. Plastic would make it lighter and easier to carry but it just wouldn't be a rifle to me.

The marriage of wood and steel has aged very well for many an age. Good plastic biogrades. There, I said it. Good plastic bio-degrades because society requires it and old farts like me requires that it be so. OK Tom, calm down and take your medication. The plastic will go away.

The question is not what makes a fine rifle, the question is how do you make a rifle into a bullpup.

in the case of the SKS Yugo 59/66, the rifle is just too long (it's the only SKS thats a rifle, the others are carbines), so you gain some FPS for the grenade launching, but they frown on launching live grenades in most states these days.

You can cut the barrel down, but then it's no longer a rifle, so the best option is the Bullpup (Most countries are now using bullpup rifles for the Military). the point that you can have a full length rifle in a smaller package, is not a bad idea. it's allows for CQB, makes the weapon have a better center of gravity, and they are far more compact.

in otherwords you really don't lose anything , and in the case of the SKS Yugo 59/66, you gain a more handy rifle.

now I have been carrying around the SGWorks Bullpup for a few days and I have to say I really like it. the ballance is nearly perfect, it's easy to hold, to carry, and while it's still heavy, it's easier to deal with due to the balance.

wood?  well you could make a wood bullpup, but you are not gaining anything.  you are adding to the weight of the design in a weapon that already too heavy, and they are very hard to keep cool.

The US stopped using wood 50 years ago for a reason.  it just does not serve combat very well.

now don't get me wrong, I love the warmth of a nice wood stock, and I think some rifles look better in wood, and if I have the money I would buy a wood stock set for one of my AR's.  when I look for a replacement stock for my Savage I really want it to be a wood stock. I would also like a nice wood stock for my K31, but not a military stock, a target stock.

I also have one of the prettiest wood stock M1 Garands around.

So I like my wood, but I have to concede that I like my wood stock more because thats the way they were, and wood jusy looks and feels better, but it does not perform better. and for a bullpup, it's a detriment more than a positive.

I have ramline stocks and I tend to not like them, they are far too heavy, so you really don't gain anything, but the SGWorks BullPup stock I really like.  I thinks it's a good start for the SKS, and it will bring more rifles collecting dust in the closet, back to the range.

The Yugo 59/66 SKS will get an all new life now with this stock and I view that as a good step.

(I don't sell these stocks, I don't get anything for saying good things about them, and I'm not paid to push the product.)

as a designer I like what it offers, and the trigger design is really good thinking. It's still the first model and it needs a few enhancements, and in fact they are already working on the next version with new improvments.

so...  it's not about wood, it's about improving a little rifle, and getting more of them to the range and being shot.  thats what they do best...  they get a little depressed sitting in the back of the safe for years at a time.

Did someone say "wood and steel"?

Check out these two pups. Built them because I didn't want the length of the Yugo and the short LOP of the Chinese.

Been doing this for about three years off and on, just for target shooting fun.

Hope everyone enjoys my efforts.

KTF

Ordered last year, waiting on delivery. Have you shot yours? What do you think/ Performance?

What would be a good sight/ scope/ red dot?

Home defense and the occasional feral hog in the wife's garden.

I've been looking at this stock for a little while, but I couldn't justify pre-ordering without seeing and hearing about a "real" person having one first. So thanks!
A quick question that was mentioned. Would you say you could realistically put a scope on this design, or would you stick to a red dot?
