Chinn's work is a masterpiece and an enormous effort considering it was started in the 1950's and I believe the last of the 5 volumes was finished in the 80's.   The U.S. government spent a ton of money to produce this 5 volume set (of which only a small part is scribed).  A complete set in good condition will push $1000 but a firearms library is lacking without it.  Fortunately, it is available electronically for about $15

You know this needs to be stickied.  It's going to get lost in the pile before anyone can read it all.  The title of the thread is not going to help much too, I think.

So far, looking at the pictures is enough for me.  I'll need to get some coffee before I can look at the equations more.

Oh...almost forgot.  Thanks Holloway. This is a great reference.

The Japanese used a rifle caliber simple UNLOCKED action magazine fed light machine gun for training purposes during WWII.

Danged if I will hunt through all those volumes to find it.  It might give some guys here an idea on how to build an UNLOCKED action 7.62 x 39 caliber rifle.

It is a thought anyway.

I found them all in one piece and as only 5 pieces last night (and not a torrent but a direct download pdf.rar) and downloaded V5, which I was missing.  Then I lost the place I found them and spent an hour trying to find it again.  Thanks for putting them up.

Has anyone seen the mega download of about 32gb of manuals and books.  The one sold on ebay and gunbroker?  I found it as a torrent but I don't do torrents.  This would be a great service to offer members.   For a $10 "membership fee" they could get the dvd with all the files and it could be updated yearly with new owners manuals, military manuals, etc.  This would allow the site to make about $5 per sale which could go to support weaponeer hosting fees.  All of this info is in the public domain.

We have a good many blueprints etc that are not on the current offerings.

Who is up to putting together "Weaponeer Library Version 1.0"?

I download a 1gb torrent a few months ago but it was mostly full auto conversion guides. Can you tell me were you found it?

Downloading...  Some good stuff, but I'd love to have a copy of it in full PRINT form.

The breadth of Chinn's work is really amazing. I'm not very deterred by mathematics though, and I'm pretty sure there are some omissions in Chinn. For example, the amazingly good blowback design section starting on page 39 in the PDF of Chinn's Volume 4 is actually missing the barrel momentum term. The barrel's momentum change is negligible for the straight-walled 20mm cannon rounds he's focusing on in that section, but the barrel momentum becomes very significant for figuring the bolt velocity for bottlenecked rounds, like rifle rounds.

I just finished up a little summary of blowback design for small arms here:
http://www.orions-hammer.com/blowback/

At the bottom is a table (and spreadsheet) listing the required bolt weight for blowback action for various calibers. For example, a straight-blowback AK would take at least a seven pound bolt!

Very nice work Orion. Feel free to post the table here under a new thread with links to your site.   I will sticky it and stick at the top of the appropriate forum. I am glad to see that your table and calculation correspond nicely with my calculations using a "known good bolt weight of similar muzzle energy".

I have never even looked at the other volumes of Chin--but I've read that Volume #4 is the one of interest to Inventors.

I have Volume IV. My Calculus is weak--but not quite nonexistent.[Actually, extreme bone-headed inability to master Calculus is why I failed out of Purdue on three separate occasions, instead of graduating--and to this day (thirty years later) it still bothers me--and I pick up a Calculus text every now and again to worry at it...]

Anyway, I really can't concentrate on books online as well as I can real books.....

But someday when I'm flush, I'm going to burn Chin Volume IV onto CD. I'm going to take him to a printing place; and have him transferred to three hole notebook paper.....

and put him in however many Jumbo loose-leaf binders it takes to hold him.   :badgering:

Hey, with regards to the recoil operation calculations. Where do I start? I am thinking of designing a new Gas operated LMG and a new recoil operated LMG. The gas operated one in 7.62x39mm and the recoil operated one in 5.56x45mm. I just want to know where to start with calculating the free recoil and rate of fire and all the other calculations in there.

ATTENTION: I AM TRYING TO ACCESS MY DISCUSSION ON NEW LMG IDEAS AND I AM NOT ABLE TO ACCESS IT. IT SAYS VBSCRIPT ERROR TYPE MISMATCH, CAN SOMEONE FIX IT?
